Lay the first Ba Balco (Balco with slope from 3/4” to 1-1/2”) onto the concrete substrate bonding it with exterior grade tile adhesive. On wooden surfaces, an additional layer of wedi® 1/4” Building Panels, fastened with wedi® fasteners (at a rate of 1 per every sq. ft.) and exterior grade thinset. The Balco Panels are set in exterior grade thinset on top of this layer.

The next Balco panel butts up tightly to the first layer. A staggered joint pattern is chosen. In all applications,the Balco’s seams receive a continuously applied 1/2” bead of wedi® joint sealant spread over the seam and pressed inside the connection using a putty knife.

Once all areas are covered with Ba Balco, all joints must be waterproofed again and wedi® joint sealant or wedi® sealing tape is applied on top of all joints (covering the joint 1” each side). A proper flashing is installed and the surface is tile ready! Cover untiled front edge of the installation against weather exposure with an appropriate profile. Please consult tile adhesive, grout and tile manufacturers instructions for proper product specifications.

Over sloped surfaces, wedi® Balco Flat Building Panel can be used. The installation is identical with the Ba Balco sloped Building Panel’s as shown above. In mild, dry climate regions, a prior layer of 1/4” wedi® Building Panel might not be necessary. Please contact us for the ideal regional layout of your application.

Ba Balco systems can be installed over existing old tiled surfaces using adequate primers prior to installing Balco in exterior grade thinset mortar. The old tiled surfaces must be stable. Old, loose tiles can be removed and are to be filled with thinset mortar to avoid hollow spots and voids underneath wedi® BA Balco.
