Specifications
wedi® Building Panel is the ultimate lightweight ceramic tile backer board, designed to provide a waterproof substrate for interior floor or wall applications. It’s also suitable for countertops, though it should not be used where extremely hot items will be placed directly on the ceramic tile surfaces.
The 1/4” and 1/2” Building Panels are designed to provide superior waterproofing, insulating and tile bond properties for flooring applications, while the 1/2”, 5/8” and 1” products are engineered for wall applications.
The wedi® building panels, unlike other foam boards, are strong and flexible. They do not compress under normal loads and traffic, and they do not break like some rigid backerboards.
wedi® Building Panels are odorless and chemically inert. Some harsh chemicals or organic solvents may cause damage to the cementitious coating or the foam core. Because the panels have no food value, they never attract plant or animal life or facilitate the growth of microorganisms.
Thanks to the properties of the extrusion process that produce closed cell foam coupled with the hydrophobic nature of polystyrene, the foam core of the wedi® Building Panel has exceptional resistance to water and water vapor. As proof, these panels meet the stringent standards of ASTM and ANSI testing for waterproofing and are suitable as part of a waterproof installation when seams and fastener heads are properly treated.

Building Panels
wedi® Building Panels are available in different thicknesses, formats and coating forms, as well as sizes ranging from standard to XL and XXL options.
Prefabricated Building Panel Elements
In addition, many prefabricated product systems are made from the wedi® Building Panel such as our U-Curbs, Shower Seats or Soap Niches.
Flexible Building Panels
Slices along one face of the Building Panel makes it possible to create an endless variety of shapes, e.g. curves, serpentine lines, etc.
Building Panels for Exterior Use
The wedi® Building Panel and wedi® Building Panel Premium are freeze & thaw cycle stable, internally waterproof, insulating and highly qualified for facade applications.
Composition & Materials
The product consists of a Styrofoam* Brand Foam insulation core, coated on both sides with a fiberglass mesh and polymer-modified resin.
Sizes
Available in 1/8 inch (3mm), 1/4 inch (6 mm), 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), 5/8 inch (I6 mm), 3/4 inch (20 mm), 1 inch (25.4 mm), 1 1/2 inch (40 mm), 2 inch (50 mm), 3 1/4 inch (83 mm), 4 inch (102 mm). Sheet sizes are 3 x 5 feet, 2 x 4 feet, 2 x 8 feet, 3 x 8 feet and 4 x 8 feet (nominal).
Finish
The Building Panel surfaces are a polymermodified resin, with a texture provided by the fiberglass mesh. Offering the best possible bond to tile adhesive in our industry today.
Color
The panels are medium gray on both faces. The exposed edges are light blue. wedi® foam based systems are not to be used as finishing materials.
Shape
The panels are rectangular, but may be cut to any shape using a simple carpet knife. A smooth edge can be achieved while creating little to no debris.
Limitations
Product should be adequately supported when installed over framing or other appropriate substrates. It should not be used over vinyl flooring and it is not intended to be used as a structural member.
Sound Deadening
wedi® Building Panels reduce airborne sound but do not reduce impact sound on floors. Tiled rigid foam backerboards cannot offer sound reduction once installed. The tile and thinset bond reduce the natural sound reduction capability of foam to zero.
Waterproof Barrier
wedi® Building Panel has been tested and demonstrated to be waterproof using ANSI A118-10-1999.
Environmental Considerations/Green Building
wedi® Building Panel is CFC-free. The product is inert. wedi® products are produced without leaving any waste in production, can be recycled and will not contribute to water pollution. The high insulating properties of wedi® products support energy conservation. Lightweight shipping helps reduce fuel consumption. The product is non-hazardous and user friendly in fabrication and use.
Fire Protection
All installations incorporating wedi® Building Panels should provide adequate fire protection. Coverings that provide a 15-minute thermal barrier, such as ceramic tile, are regarded as acceptable in most applications. The product passed the Room Fire Test. In the surface building test it had a flame spread index of 20 or less and a smoke developed index of 360-415. Unlike other foam boards, it has no paper layers that ignite and fuel flames.
Physical/Chemical Properties
wedi® Building Panel is lightweight and easy to handle, cut and install. wedi® Building Panels have met ASTM C627, commonly known as the Robinson Floor Test, requirements for residential and commercial use. Test reports are available.
Building Codes
Current information on Building Panel code requirements and product compliance may be obtained from a wedi® technical sales specialist. Installation must comply with the requirements of all applicable local, state and national code jurisdictions.
